Tile & Natural Stone FAQ

What is the difference between porcelain and ceramic?

Ceramic tile is made from finely ground clay and minerals pressed into the shape of the tile. Glaze is then applied to provide the color and texture. It is then fired to harden the tile and melt the glaze. Porcelain is also made from finely ground clay and minerals but with a much higher quality of feldspar minerals than clay. It is also pressed into shape but at a much higher pressures. This makes porcelain harder, stronger, and more wear resistant. That being said, a good quality ceramic tile in an interior residential application will last the life of the home if installed properly. We can guide you in the correct choice for your tile project.

Will all my tiles be the same shade?

Shading is inherent in all tiles. Most tiles are graded from variation 1 to 4, with 4 being substantial. Check the same board or consult with your salesperson to determine the variation and avoid surprises when it comes time to purchase and install.

With all the tiles available, how do I decide what is the right product for me?

A consultation with one of our salespeople will make what seems like a daunting task, very easy. We have completed thousands of projects with many different materials and can advise you on the best choice for your application.

What does PEI mean?
PEI is a classification used to determine abrasion and scratch resistance for the tile surface. Tiles are graded from 0 to 5 with 0 being suitable for walls only and 5 for heavy commercial traffic. We recommend using either a PEI 4 or higher for most flooring installations. Most tiles are suitable for installation on walls.
How do I clean Tile & Grout?

Ceramic and porcelain tile is nearly impervious to liquid. Grout, on the other hand is generally cement based, very porous, and should be sealed. We carry a full line of tile and stone cleaners and sealers.
